The Oyster Festival takes over historic Oyster Bay Harbor Saturday and Sunday. The festival, which draws an estimated 200,000 people (and more to count) , features live music, a carnival, petting zoo, fireworks, arts and crafts, more than 100 vendors, oyster eating and shucking contests in addition to a menu that went well beyond just shellfish. The festivals includes preparing and dishing out more than 40,000 East Coast oysters on the half shell in two days which a participant of the festival said that it is not an easy task. “The most difficult part is opening them with the knife, because sometimes the knife goes through and it can cut your hand,” said Freddy, one participant who prepare the oysters to eat.

The Oyster Festival is one of the largest nonprofit events dedicated to raising funds for the charitable organizations that provide the society. Scheduled performers include former American Idol contestant Jerome Bell, The Island Xtreme All Stars Cheerleading team and a handful of local bands. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto shared in the sentiment at an August news conference promoting the event. “I don’t know if there’s another event that is so successful… it really puts a face on this town,” he said town. “It’s definitely [this town's] signature event.”
