Zany experiments testing scientific theories in real-world settings have earned the TV show “MythBusters” of Discovery Channel a devoted following, but something went terribly awry when the fired cannonball ended up smashing two holes through a house. Fortunately, the blast of the experiment missed a family that was asleep inside in a house located in Dublin, Calif.”It was crazy. That’s for sure,” Sgt. J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department told the Daily News. “If someone asked me two days ago, ‘Could this homemade cannon shoot that far, off a hill into this neighborhood?’ I would have said no way. But now it’s confirmed.”
Sheriff’s deputies are still measuring how, exactly, the cannonball flew and blasted into a master bedroom through a front door before landing in a neighbor’s parked minivan. The ball somehow was placed on a bomb range in the rolling hills flanking a suburban San Francisco Bay area neighborhood. The nearby firing range where the experiment was set up had been used in stunts about 50 previous times without incident, according to Sgt. J.D. Nelson.”We are really, really grateful and glad that no one was hurt,” co-host and executive producer Adam Savage said in an interview. “Discovery is committed to making this right and making sure that everything that has been damaged is as good or better as before this started.” Nelson said the San Francisco-based TV production has insurance coverage, but that the bomb disposal range has been shut down pending a safety review.
