The St. Louis Cardinals, who were a strike away from losing the World Series on Thursday night, won it on Friday by beating the Texas Rangers, 6-2, in Game 7 at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals won a remarkable World Series they weren’t even supposed to reach with another key hit by hometown star David Freese and six gutty innings from Chris Carpenter. The Cardinals took Chris Carpenter at his word and he gave St. Louis its second championship in five years. “It started off a little rough in the first but I was able to collect myself, make some pitches and our guys did an awesome job to battle back,” Carpenter said. “And I mean, it’s just amazing.”
A rainout on Wednesday gave Carpenter a shot to start on three days’ rest for just the second time in his career in Game 7 and the second time this postseason. He allowed two runs in six-plus innings. A year full of inspiring rallies and epic collapses was encapsulated in Game 6. Freese was the star, with a tying triple in the ninth and a winning home run in the 11th. His two RBIs in the clincher gave him a postseason record 21 and named him as the World Series M.V.P.
