“Dancing With the Stars” champ and war veteran J.R. Martinez received an invitation from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Friday, who asked the ex-serviceman to visit the Pentagon and meet Panetta in person. During a 10-minute telephone call Friday, Panetta told the dance champion he demonstrated the strength and resilience of wounded veterans, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said. Exact details of the congratulatory trip are still being worked out, but it’s said the “Dancing With the Stars” Season 13 champ, J. R. Martinez, will be expected to address thousands of active and retired troops while he’s in the D.C. area.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Panetta’s respect for J.R. was displayed in a congratulatory note, which read: “Your strength and spirit captivated the nation, and your victory sends a strong message about the strength and resilience of our wounded warriors.” Martinez and professional partner Karina Smirnoff bested fellow finalists Rob Kardashian and Ricki Lake in the finale broadcast Tuesday. Along with his journey to the Pentagon, J.R. has been tapped as the Grand Marshal of the 2012 Rose Parade and will also co-host the pre-show of CNN’s “Heroes: An All-Star Tribute”. After the accident happened at his duty in Iraq, Martinez became a motivational presenter and in 2008 won a role on the now-retired ABC soap opera “All My Children.”
