Several days after HP was reported to begin sending over 500 employees a notice of terminations in the WebOS division, the company announced to stop making WebOS devices in August. Recently HP said that the company has chosen the new CEO, Meg Whitman, replacing the former CEO, Leo Aphoteker. The decision was made effective immediately, following the pronouncement that Apotheker stepped down as president and CEO and resigned as a director of the company. However, some analysts gave an opinion that Whitman, an Internet retail expert with a mixed track record, is not an obvious choice to revive HP. The failed California gubernatorial candidate transformed eBay from a few dozen employees in 1998 into a global Internet trade powerhouse, but in the last years of her leadership were marked with unwise decision including the acquisition of Skype which aroused Wall Street critique.

Moreover, the HP board also plans to appoint an independent director which an internal source said that he group was not preparing to make changes to its strategy. The full HP board had not officially voted on Whitman’s appointment as CEO but the process to accompany her in was on track. Whitman has her work cut out to try and turn the wrong way ship around. Thus, it will be a difficult challenge for the new CEO to make public believe in her successful effort in HP.
