Awards season kicked off in earnest on Thursday morning with the announcement of the 2012 Golden Globe nominations. Silent movie “The Artist” led all movies with six nominations overall including best film comedy or musical in the race to Hollywood’s Oscars. Following “The Artist” among top nominees for the key film awards were “The Descendants,” starring George Clooney as a man struggling to keep his family together. Clooney’s “The Descendants” and “The Ides of March” are nominated nine times, and both films are among the six nominated for best drama.

For the best actor in a drama, Clooney is nominated for his role for “Descendants” role. Moreover, “Descendants” co-star Shailene Woodley is nominated for best supporting actress and Alexander Payne has got nods for best director and best screenplay. Ryan Gosling also scored big, with nominations for Best Actor in both comedy and drama, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” and “The Ides of March.” The other best drama film nominees include “The Help,” which is nominated for five Globes which boosted its chance at Oscars by a strong showing at Thursday’s Golden Globe nominees. “I see great versatility, there is a variety of subjects being brought up in a variety of formats,” said Aida Takla-O’Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the Golden Globe Awards.
