Black Friday got down to its earliest start in history when shoppers left their Thanksgiving Day Thursday night and went down to the mall, shop and department store. The many retailers’ advertisements were leaked to transaction sites Friday morning with a number of sale prices that are sure to have shoppers lining up Thanksgiving night. Crowds lined up for midnight openings at Best Buy, Target, Kohl’s and Macy’s as retailers went down to get first break at consumers’ tight holiday financial plans. Wal-Mart opened even earlier at 10 p.m. and Toys ‘R’ Us started at 9 p.m.
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, often at 4 a.m and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season. However, most shops and retailers on this Black Friday opened hours earlier to please the customers. “The goal was for the early bird to catch the worm and that was accomplished,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based consumer research firm. For the 2nd consecutive year, Black Friday was the highest day for retail traffic during the holiday season, followed by Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday.
