The Minnesota Valkyrie is the new additional team for Lingerie Football League which started playing the game in the new season of 2011. Actually, the naming “Valkyrie” for the Minnesota LFL team raises a lot of contradiction. While the choice of the name was voted by people as it has been used recently as the official name of the team, it marginalized the other Minnesota sport team which have originally used the name years before the Minnesota LFL’s team. A Valkyrie, by the by, is a woman from Norse mythology who chose who would die in battle, then ferried their souls to Valhalla.
The name “Valkyrie” for the LFL’s Minnesota team was submitted most frequently, received a record of 31,451 votes and was subsequently chosen as the new name of the team. However, the LFL’s Minnesota team is considered hijacking the official name of Minnesota rugby club, The Minnesota Valkyries Rugby Club. Now the LFL has grown to 12 teams and the league will have eight more games with the addition of the Cleveland Crush, Las Vegas Sin, Toronto Triumph and the teams facing off tonight: Valkyrie and Chill (three teams from 2010 which have suspended play).
