“Dressage” is a French word that roughly translates as “training” – the basic training of all riding horses (and other animals, for that matter). Dressage and horse riding are among the world’s oldest sporting activities. In competitive dressage, riders progress through of tests of ever increasing difficulty. Each test is a set routine of movements designed to show the suppleness, obedience and strength of the horse. Judges award marks for the quality and precision of the performance and also give collective marks for horse and rider.

Dressage at Devon is known for attracting the best in upper-level equestrian competition, and local riders are proving they belong in that field. Spectators come to Devon for different reasons, sometimes to support friends or relatives who are riding in the show. “I usually come here every year,” said Tiffany Arey of Collegeville. “I actually ride hunt seat but I did a little dressage cross training when I was recovering from a knee injury and was not allowed to jump, so I really do have an appreciation for the discipline. It’s great to watch.
