The whale shark is the icon of the ocean wild animal and called as threatening fish. In the other side, many fishermen see it’s enchanting and challenging to hunt them. A whale shark promises huge of profit for the obsessive fishermen if they’re successfully pulling them out of the water. Four months ago, a 25-foot-long dead whale washed onto the beach. It was sold for a sizable sum: 100,000 plus rupees, or more than $2,000. Less than two weeks ago, the fishermen discovered a massive whale shark unconscious offshore. Tuesday, CBS news reports the 40-foot-long, seven-ton fish was finally pulled out of the water in Karachi, Pakistan. The dead gentle giant took five cranes to lift. And then yeah, the shark’s meat earned 1.7 million rupees, equivalent with $ 18,000.
It’s also not hard to found the whale sharks mutilated with their fins cut off, left by the hunters to die. In October, Washington post reported on newly released photos by the Pew Environment Group, which showed rows and rows of fins in Taiwan, as far as the eye could see. The photos “suggest that Taiwan, which reports the fourth-largest shark catch in the world, is an even greater player in the international shark trade than previously thought’. Whale shark hunting is banned in many countries in Southeast Asia, and yet the giant fish continues to be highly sought after. While Taiwan reports the fourth-largest shark catch in the world, TRAFFIC International recently placed Pakistan as 12th among the shark exporting countries in the world.
In 2005, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources declared the global whale shark population was vulnerable, MSNBC observes. And the fact about population number was getting worse. In 2008, the shark had been moved to the organization’s red list, which is reserved for threatened species.
The threat to the whale shark population is not only come from whale shark hunt, it’s also about the habitat damage. According to the Whale Shark Project, a conservation awareness group, pollution and over fishing near reefs often leads to a reduced available food supply for the creatures. In an effort to help protect the animals, some businesses have turned to ecotourism to educate people about the sharks and their environment.
The Longtime fishermen and divers admitted that whale sharks are really amazing animals. They are wildlife animals and make a wrong movement near them could bring more harm than good. But they are a gentle giant that do not strike divers who swim alongside them. Another said the other peculiarity that makes sharks are amazing is their price and meat. What then? Just let them, the ambitious hunter, live more wild than those sharks. What is the right way to admire whale sharks? Feel happy to consume them as tofu fish or Feel happy to see them live wild in the ocean?
